Guy Sheffer maintains “OctoPi”, a Raspbian based SD card image for the Raspberry Pi that already includes OctoPrint plus everything you need to run it. OctoPrint plus its dependencies; MJPG-Streamer for live viewing of prints and timelapse video creation, compatible with various USB webcams and the Raspberry Pi camera; CuraEngine 15.04 for slicing directly on your. The OctoPrint disk image is huge and will take a while to download. It comes in a compressed zip file, and you'll need to unzip that. On a Mac, double click on the zip file. When it's done, you'll have another file that ends in.img.

I also tried with bigger block size. It took twice as long to write:

It took 74 minutes

The disk image did not work. The ACT (green) LED was on but not blinking.

I downloaded the image to Win7 and downloaded the Win32ImageWriter app. It transferred the image at ~3.4MB/s, at least 3 times faster than the Mac.

Plugged in keyboard, wifi adapter, HDMI cable. Enabled the Raspberry to use the entire 16GB disk.

I downloaded and installed the 'devel' version of Octoprint:

5Alternative Installation Methods

Introduction

There are many ways to install Scribus on your Mac but the simplest methods are to download either the Scribus Disk Image (DMG) or the Scribus Package Installer (PKG).

The instructions below will show you how to install Scribus using either of these methods.

Other installation methods are available. If you really want to make things more complicated for yourself, see the list of alternatives at the end of this article.

These instructions are for Intel Macs running OS X Leopard (10.5) or later. If you're using an older system then you'll need to search the wiki/web for other instructions.

As of OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) Apple introduced something called Gatekeeper. This is Apple's way of - depending how you look at it - either protecting you from software that could be a problem, or, making it more difficult to install software that Apple hasn't approved. If at any point you get a message saying something like 'Scribus.app' can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.' then you'll need to bypass Gatekeeper. See this article for instructions about doing this. This is not a problem with Scribus, you'll get this a lot if you install Open Source Software on OS X.

You might be asked at some point - depending on how your system is set-up - if you're sure you want to install something from the internet. For the purposes of installing Scribus and/or GhostScript (see below), if you are asked this kind of question just click 'Yes' or 'OK'.

Installing GhostScript

Before you think about installing Scribus you need to think about whether you should install GhostScript first.

If you've already installed Scribus before installing GhostScript you will get messages telling you that GhostScript isn't installed. If you want to stop these messages you'll need to install Ghostscript. See later in this article for instructions on how to install GhostScript after installing Scribus.

GhostScript is software that provides services to other applications. Specifically, for Scribus, it allows you to import PostScript (PS) images, Extended PostScript (EPS) images, and PDF files (as images). It also allows you to export your document as PS or EPS (rather than the normal PDF export). It is also needed if you want to use the 'Print Plate' Preview functions.

If you don't think that you will need these functions - and not everyone does - then you don't need to install GhostScript but you will get a message each time you start Scribus mentioning that GhostScript isn't installed. You can always follow the instructions below if you change your mind later.

If, on the other hand, you want to make sure that Scribus is ready for whatever you need to do with it then you should install GhostScript. It's entirely your choice.

If you're not installing GhostScript then skip the rest of this section and go to next section.

You can download the latest version of GhostScript from here.

GhostScript is available from many other places on the web but be aware that some other installations - if you don't trust the source - may contain viruses or other malicious software (malware). Install from the recommended source shown above and you should be fine.

Locate the 'GhostScript xx.xx' link with the highest 'xx.xx' version number - it's usually near the top of the page - and click on it. This will start the download of the GhostScript PKG (Package Installer). How the download actually happens is dependant on your browser and system set-up, and thus outside the scope of this article.

Once the PKG has downloaded, open the folder it was downloaded to (this is usually 'Downloads' within your own Home folder).

Double click the PKG icon and follow the on-screen instructions. Accept the defaults if you don't know what to change.

Once the process has finished, GhostScript should be installed and ready for action.

There is no Application icon for GhostScript. As it's 'service software' there is nothing for you to run yourself, so there's no icon for it.

Installing Scribus

Once you've got GhostScript installed - really, do that first - you can get down to installing Scribus itself.

As mentioned earlier, there are two easy options for doing this:

DMG - Disk Image
PKG - Package Installer

Neither option is particularly difficult but they are quite different, so each is described below.

When you run Scribus for the first time it will check all of the fonts installed on your system to see if it can use them properly. If you have a lot of fonts this process might take quite some time. Please be patient.
